Trampoline motions in Xe-graphite (0001) surface scattering

چکیده
We have investigated Xe scattering from the graphite(0001) surface at hyperthermal incident energies using a molecular beam-surface scattering technique and molecular dynamics simulations. For all incident conditions, the incident Xe atom conserves the momentum parallel to the surface and loses approximately 80% of the normal incident energy. The weak interlayer potential of graphite disperses the deformation over the wide range of a graphene sheet. The dynamic corrugation induced by the collision is smooth even at hyperthermal incident energy; the graphene sheet moves like a trampoline net and the Xe atom like a trampoliner. * Corresponding Authors. Hyperthermal Ar atom scattering from a C(0001) surface.
Experiments and simulations on the scattering of hyperthermal Ar from a C(0001) surface have been conducted. Measurements of the energy and angular distributions of the scattered Ar flux were made over a range of incident angles, incident energies (2.8-14.1 eV), and surface temperatures (150-700 K). In all cases, the scattering is concentrated in a narrow superspecular peak, with significant en...
متن کاملEnergy transfer in hyperthermal Xe - graphite surface scattering
The scattering of a hyperthermal Xe from a graphite(0001) surface has been studied using a molecular beam-surface scattering technique and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The angular and velocity distributions of scattered Xe atoms were measured at incidence energies from 0.45 to 3.5 eV, three incidence angles of 15◦, 35◦ and 60◦ and the surface temperatures of 300 K and 550 K. The observe...
متن کاملScattering of Xe from graphite.
Recently a series of experimental measurements for the scattering of Xe atoms from graphite has been reported for both energy-resolved spectra and angular distributions. This system is of fundamental interest because the projectile Xe atoms are considerably more massive than the carbon atoms making up the graphite surface. These measurements were initially analyzed using the hard cubes model an...
متن کاملNumerical investigation of the elastic scattering of hydrogen (isotopes) and helium at graphite (0001) surfaces at beam energies of 1 to 4 eV using a split-step Fourier method
We report simulations of the elastic scattering of atomic hydrogen isotopes and helium beams from graphite (0001) surfaces in an energy range of 1-4 eV. To this aim, we numerically solve a time-dependent Schrödinger equation using a split-step Fourier method. The hydrogen- and helium-graphite potentials are derived from density functional theory calculations using a cluster model for the graphi...
متن کاملWetting transition behavior of Xe on Cs and Cs/graphite
Calculations are presented of the adsorption behavior of Xe films on two different surfaces. One is bulk Cs metal; the other is a graphite surface, covered by a monolayer of Cs. With data obtained from grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations, it is found that a Xe wetting transition occurs on the Cs monolayer within the temperature interval 190 to 200 K. On the Cs metal surface, negligible adso...
